1. Overall:
Built from the airport was badly damaged during the war, Noi Bai International Airport has spent nearly 40 years constructing and developing to become a modern airport, as a gateway connecting Ha Noi Capital with other countries all over the world. It is an airport of 4E aerodrome classification – ICAO standard, equipped with 02 runways, air navigation aids system CAT II, taxiways, apron capable of accommodating wide-body aircrafts in the limited visibility, namely, Airbus A380, Boing 787, etc.
Apart from the temperate climate, tourist attractions of neighbor regions, Noi Bai International airport is forecast to improve to become a trading airport, a central hub in the region and in the world.
Noi Bai International Airport is located at Soc Son Dist., Ha Noi city, is 28 km away from the center (35-40 mins by car) northwards, following Nhat Tan bridge – Vo Nguyen Giap Str., or Thang Long bridge – Vo Van Kiet Str., through Highway 03 starting from Chuong Duong bridge to T-junction of highway 02 to travel to the airport.
In addition, Noi Bai International Airport is called as the significant gateway that connect Hanoi capital with the Northwest provinces through Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway (passing through 05 provinces, for example, Ha Noi, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Yen Bai and Lao Cai, linked with Con Minh – Ha Khau expressway of China and be a part of AH14 transasia road); 18A highway from Noi Bai to the northeast provinces (passing through 04 provinces, for example, Ha Noi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Quan Ninh).
2. Airport infrastructure:
Being a civil airport, also serving for military flight operation, comprising of the civil area in the south and the military area in the north of the runway. Noi Bai International airport can accommodate scheduled flights, unscheduled flights, personal aircrafts and facilitates 24/24.
Noi Bai International Airport has 02 parallel runways, namely, 11L/29R and 11R/29L; distance between 2 runway centers: 250 meters, not handling for landing and take-off at the same time. 11L/29R RWY of 3,200 meters long and 45 meters wide; 11R/29L RWY of 3,800 meters long and 45 meters wide.
Taxiway : 02 taxiway systems located at the pavements of 11L/29R RWY (the north) and 11R/29L (the south). Meanwhile, the taxiway system in the north and south of 11L/29R RWY is respectively used for military and civil purpose.
Apron: presently serving 47 aircraft parking stands of T1 and T2 aprons. Apart from the aircraft parking stands hereinbefore, Noi Bai International Airport also has aircraft parking stands for aircraft repair and maintenance (VAECO apron) and isolation apron in the north (sharing the borders with military area) used for emergency situations (aircrafts with information on explosive, unlawful interference).
3. Domestic passenger terminal (T1 terminal):
T1 terminal was put into operation in October 2001 covering of 90,000 square meters including 04 areas: Hall A, Hall B, Hall C, Hall D, its handling capacity of 6 million passengers per year. In the end of 2013, Hall E ( the expanded area of T1 terminal) was opened, enhancing the total area up to 115.000 square meters and the airport capacity of 9 million passengers per year. However, Noi Bai International airport accommodated 12,825,784 passengers, exceeding 42% compared to the total designed airport capability.
From 31 December 2014, T1 Terminal has just facilitated domestic flights (all of international flights has been operated at Terminal T2).
4. International passenger terminal (terminal T2)
Terminal T2 was put into operation on 25 December 2014, with linear shape of 4 storeys (excluding the basement) based on the idea of harmony with nature, natural lighting, energy saving, covering of 139,216 square meters, 980 meters in length, 29 meters in height, the capacity of 10 million passengers per year, well-equipped with advanced/international- standard facilities.
The first floor: for arrival international passengers, covering of 40,832.60 square meters. Office and technique areas are situated at 2 wings of the terminal; the center area comprises of arrival duty free, arrival int’l passenger hall, arrival baggage conveyors, departure baggage conveyors, lost & found, technical room, bus platform, service area, staff room, restroom, information counter, ticket counter, stores.
The second floor: for transit/transfer passengers, covering of 36,928.90 square meters. Office in the south and waiting lounge in the north are situated at 2 wings of the terminal; the center area consists of transit/transfer check-in, immigration area, public area including restaurants, stores, etc.
The third floor: For departure int’l passenger, covering of 36,928.90 square meters. Waiting lounges are placed at 2 wings of the terminal; the center area comprises of commercial service area, check-in area, security and customs inspection, etc.
The fourth floor: business lounge and commercial area, covering of 11,164.40 square meters.
The terminal can accommodate 30,000 passenger/peak day and serve 230 flights/peak day; accommodate 3,000 passengers/peak hour and serve 23 flights/peak hour. The terminal can facilitate 10 million passengers a year ( in the period of 2015-2020) and 15 million passengers a year (in the period of 2020-2030).
Transporting transit/transfer passengers between domestic passenger terminal and international passenger terminal:
Shuttle bus is provided free for transit/transfer passengers to travel between two terminals, serving from 06h00 to 24h00 (local time) with the frequency from 10 to 15 minutes / 01 turn away. In addition, there are other transportation, for example, tramcar, public bus.
5. Executive building VIP A:
Executive building VIP A was opened from January 2015, at which is the same time of passenger terminal T2. It is necessary as a part of diplomatic protocol to construct a large and modern executive building at the gateway of capital, in order to receive high-rank delegations of Vietnam as well as other countries. The executive building also provides services as a greeting place to organizations and international businesses on demand.
Executive building VIP A spreads 3,100 square meters, highlighted by the shape of “the petals-garden pavilion”, inspired by the garden and water concepts of the lakes in Ha Noi, a petal-like roof with lotus-pod-like skylights extends over and beyond the main axis, pockets of courtyards are created as daylight permeates deep into the main lounges.

Executive Building VIP A shares the border with Passenger Terminal – T2 in the west, Passenger Terminal – T2 in the east, Apron in the north, and the airport main axis in the south. The executive building is isolated by a surrounding fence for security and separation. Reception Hall, State Lounge and President’s Lounge is formally arranged at the center of executive building. Other rooms, for the entourage and management, are located round the main ones and apart from the center area.
6. Cargo terminal:
Cargo Terminal – Noi Bai International Airport covers of 44,000 square meters, can handle 203,000 tons of cargo a year. The recent year saw a sharp increase in air traffic volume, an average of around 15% a year.

7. Aviation Operation:
At the moment, Noi Bai International Airport is served by 32 operating airlines, comprising of domestic and international airlines, frequently serving 15 provinces in the nation and 34 cities in the world.
The airport has undergone a dramatic incline in air traffic volume, at an average annual growth rate of 10-15%. 2014 saw 14,190,675 passengers, climbing by 10.6% compared to 2012’s; 405,407 tons of cargo, increasing by 16.4% compared to 2013’s; 100,864 flights, increasing by 12.3% compared to 2013’s.
8. Planning of Noi Bai International Airport:
In accordance with the planning approved by the Government, it is predicted after 2020, Noi Bai International airport will be re-constructed to be an airport of 4F aerodrome classification – ICAO standard; build the third runway which is installed Instrument landing system CAT capable of coping with 45 aircrafts (F level) during peak hour; passenger terminals – T3, T4 will be added to the airport to increase the passenger capacity up to 50 million per year, and the cargo capacity up to 500,000 tons per year.
